James Sutton of Marysborough Australia was born in 1827 to William Sutton and Elizabeth Griffiths Sutton. He had siblings George Sutton, Florence Sutton, Ellen Louisa Sutton, and William Sutton. He married Jane Saunders Sutton in 1862, and had children Annie Sutton, Elizabeth Sutton, Helena Smith, Mary Sutton, James Sutton, George Sutton, and Ellen Sutton. James Sutton died at age 66 years old in 1893 in Marysborough.

In 1827, in the year that James Sutton was born, Englishman John Walker invented the first friction match, which he named Lucifer. The match consisted of a wooden stick coated with sulphur and tipped with a mixture of sulphide of antimony, chlorate of potash, and gum. A box of 50 matches was one shilling and came with folded sandpaper to use to strike a match.

In 1837, by the time he was just 10 years old, on June 20th, 18-year-old Queen Victoria became the Queen of the United Kingdom upon the death of her uncle William IV - who had died without legitimate heirs.
