Joseph Giacona was born to parents Filippo "Phillip" Giacona and Giovanna "Jennie" Lococo. He was white of Italian heritage. His mother Jennie was born in 1893 in Sicilia, Italy and passed away in 1942. His father Phillip was born on September 29, 1887 in San Giuseppe Jato, Sicily and immigrated to the US around 1904. He passed away on February 25, 1959 in Broward, Florida, United States.

Joseph had siblings Nicolina "Nellie" Giacona (1913-2007), Rose Giacona (1916-1955), and Frieda Giacona (1927-2013). He was a high school graduate and also completed at least three years of college. He was a student at Saint Louis University (St Louis, Missouri, USA) in 1940.
