In 1906, in the year that Joseph William Curtis (My Father) was born, President Theodore Roosevelt received the Nobel Prize for Peace. The award was considered controversial at the time because many thought that he was an imperialist. For these two reasons, the Nobel Prize committee chose him for the Peace Prize.

Westinghouse, a leading manufacturer of radios and the backer of the station, chose the date because of the Presidential election. Four years later, there were 600 commercial stations broadcasting in the U.S.

In 1941, on June 25th, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 8802, prohibiting racial discrimination in the defense industry. In 1950, on June 25th, the Korean War began when North Korean Communist forces crossed the 38th parallel. The Soviet Union and China backed North Korea and the U.N., primarily the United States backed South Korea.
