Léon Bessette was born on May 20, 1866 in Richford, Franklin County, Vermont United States to Xavier Isaac Bessette and Salomée Bessette (Née Cadoret), and had siblings Mary Lena Gagnon (Née Bessette), Andrew Bessette, Seymour Auguste Bessette, Isidore Bessette, Anna Ducate (Née Bessette), Agnes Alma Kennedy (Née Bessette), and Napoléon Bessette. Léon Bessette died at age 8 years old on May 20, 1874.

In 1866, in the year that Léon Bessette was born, on May 10th, the "banker's bank" - London bank Overend, Gurney and Company - collapsed, beginning the Panic of 1866. Unemployment went up to 8% and wages went down. Only about 16% of joint-stock companies - a company whose stock is owned jointly by the shareholders - weathered the Panic.

In 1871, he was only 5 years old when on October 8th, 4 major fires started on the shores of Lake Michigan - in Chicago (Illinois), Peshtigo (Wisconsin), Holland (Michigan) and Manistee (Michigan). The Chicago fire is the most well known of them because it left almost 100,000 people homeless. But the Peshtigo Fire killed around 2,500 people. The casualty count made it the deadliest fire in US history.
