Begun by the French in the 1880's and abandoned, the United States undertook further construction in 1904. The disaster was so shocking that it replaced World War II in the headlines and lead to reforms in safety standards and codes.

1944 - Leonard was 30 years old when on November 7th, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was reelected to a fourth term as President of the United States. Running against Thomas Dewey, Governor of New York, Roosevelt won 53.4 of the popular vote, Dewey got 45.9%.
