  • Obituary

My father enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1928 when airplanes were wood frames covered with cloth and held together with wire. And 30 years later he saw first-hand the coming of the jet age. He was born in a little town in Montana near the Canadian border, on the 22nd of May 1909, to Leonard Jay Balch Chapman and Anna May North. His father was born in Vallejo, Calif., and Anna in St. Joseph, Missouri. My father can trace his lineage back to Edward Chapman who left the shores of England, landing in Massachusetts around 1638. Edward's descendants are now in every state in the country, numbering in the 10's of thousands. Leonard began his military career in the Philippines Islands in 1928, transferring back to states in 1931 where he was stationed at March Field, California. While at March, he was involved with the testing of parachutes of various designs, and jumped from perfectly good aircraft to see if they would be of value to the service! As the years went by he became more involved with the aircraft, eventually becoming one of the top rated "flight engineers" in the U.S. Air Force. Just before the outbreak of World War II, Leonard was stationed at Long Beach, Ca., with the old 6th Ferrying Command. In 1942 he was transfered to India, where he was flying supplies into China and Burma, in the famous "China, Burma, India Campaign", or "CBI". At the end of the war, Leonard came home to the old airbase at Long Beach, then to Kelly Field, in San Antonio for three years, returning again to Long Beach. He was called to duty by then Col. William H. Turner to take part in the "Berlin Airlift". This was one of the greatest undertakings ever; to supply the people of Berlin with food and coal. It was a very demanding job, and Master Sergeant Chapman was in it from the beginning to the end! Back home on American soil, he settled down to normal "Chief Flight Line" supervisory work, when again he was summoned to Frankfurt, Germany in 1952. He sent for his family, and all of us (1 wife, 1 son (me) and 3 daughters) arrived in the Fatherland, spending three wonderful years there. Finally, dad was able to finish his duties and retire in Oct. 1958, with over thirty years of service as one of the top rated Master Sergeants in the U.S. Air Force. He lived another 46 years, retiring from the Minute Maid Company, playing golf and traveling around the country.
