Leopold Joseph Bernier was born to Joseph Cleophas Bernier (1865 - 1955) and Athala Couture (1867 - 1966). His father was born in Canada, as was his mother. He had eleven siblings: Marie, Antoinette, Alice Regina, Henry Joseph "Harry", Joseph Alphonse, Laurie Marie, Adeloza "Della", Camilla M., Anna, Joseph Clifford, and Alphonse J. Bernier. Leopold Bernier married Berthe "Bertha" R. Cloutier (1900 - 1989) on February 5, 1923 and they had two children, including Ralph Leo Bernier (1924 - 2010).

He died in Brooklyn, Connecticut at the age of 83. He was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Danielson, Connecticut.

When he was 29 and living in Connecticut, Leopold was a Shear fixer in a cotton mill. His death certificate said that he was the "boss of the shearing department in a textile mill",
