Lewis Allen Mills of Geelong Australia was born in 1852 to Allen Mills and Esther Low Mills. He had siblings Thomas Mills, Alice Mills, Charlotte Esther Mills, Frederick Mills, and William Mills. He married Agnes Edith (Millard) Mills in 1874, and had children Edward Lewis Mills, Henry Mills, Ernest Mills, Charles Albert Mills, and Ethel Agnes Mills. Lewis Mills died at age 69 years old in 1921 in Geelong.

In 1898, by the time he was 46 years old, on February 15th, the USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana harbor. The reason for the explosion has never been found, but it killed 266 men. "Remember the Maine" became a rallying cry and precipitated the United States' declaration of war on Spain two months later - the beginning of the Spanish-American War. On December 10th, the war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The Treaty gave the U.S. Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Guam - for $20 million - and, temporarily, Cuba.
