John Williamson Hays Lowery 1855 - 1932

John Williamson Lowery of Sandhurst, City of Frankston County, VIC Australia was born on May 8, 1855 in Eaglehawk, Greater Bendigo City County to Samuel Hayes Lowery and Edith Williamson Lowry. He had siblings Eliza Lowery, Hugh William Lowery, Frances Catherine (Lowry) Garton, Edith Lowry Twyford, William James Lowry, Samuel Lamont Lowry, Frances William Lowry, and Thomas Gilchrist Lowry. He married Agnes Jane (Kinnaird) Lowry in 1889, and had children Robert Kinnaird Lowry, Isobel Edith Lowry, Elsie Lowry, and Arthur Lowry. John Lowery died at age 76 years old on January 21, 1932 in Foster, South Gippsland Shire County.

In 1855, in the year that John Williamson Hays Lowery was born, on March 3rd, Congress appropriated $30,000 to create the U.S. Camel Corps. The idea was to use camels as pack animals in the Southwest and 34 camels were bought. But the Army wasn't enthusiastic about the idea and after the Civil War the Camel Corps was entirely abandoned.
