4 Memories, Stories & Photos about Philip

One day the class had a remarkable visitor--Jon Sablon, the black TV reporter. When I came in, he and two(?) associates were hanging around my desk, or seated atop it. When he saw me coming toward him my expression made him look a bit apprehensive, and he got off my desk when I slammed my books down on it. But Sablon and the others stayed nearby. I had no idea there was a "VIP" right near me.
Sablon had come to do a report questioning the relevance of the course Mr. Stearns was teaching. He had some girl in the class raise her hand and ask what is the point of this class or some such. I don't recall what Mr. Stearns said in response but after Sablon and his crew were gone he said he was "less than cooperative" (in answering the question) and it was phony(?).

Stearns' class wasn't a top priority for me. One day around the spring of '76 I was reading a book for western civ in his class. Noticing this, Philip got annoyed and gave the whole class a ton of homework. I was mad but he looked right back at me; obviously it was my fault.
Most of the time Stearns looked at me favorably, knowing I was more knowledgeable than most kids.

In some ways Philip was unconventional. I remember on "senior skip day" '76, he didn't anticipate any kids arriving in his class. Some teachers expected kids to show up that day but not him. I passed by his room, and saw him sitting down talking to somebody. I definitely got the impression he didn't expect to teach class on "skip" day.
Philip was also less inhibited than most other faculty members. Once he pointed out that it's OK for a man to have more than one woman but what do they call a woman with more than one man? I think he wrote on the blackboard the answers he got--"s***, b****, w****."
