    R. Dale Powell was born at home in the house his father built in the St. Johns area of North Portland. He went to Benson High School, then joined the Merchant Marines. He married his childhood sweetheart, Geneva Moore, on January 18, 1942, at Pioneer Methodist Church. He worked at Portland Gas and Coke Company (now Northwest Natural) until being drafted into the Army. He served in France and Germany during World War II. Dale and Geneva had 3 children: Genne, Michael, and Kathy. Dale had a passion for the American flag and made flag poles for all his children's homes. Moving to Salem in 1968, Dale worked for NW Natural Gas as a Service Man and Field Supervisor until his retirement in 1983, after 41 years of service. Dale was an enthusiastic volunteer, offering his energy and leadership to a wide variety of organizations. A gifted mechanic, he restored historic farm machinery as a hobby and was active for over 30 years in Antique Powerland. He was an active member and past president of the Salem Optimist Club, and focused much of his energy on helping youth, which included helping direct a Junior Achievement Program. Dale was a life-long blood donor, and he and Geneva enjoyed years of service delivering Meals on Wheels together. An avid runner, Dale participated in countless marathons, and assisted with the running program for inmates at the Oregon State Penitentiary. For decades Dale and Geneva worked the Christmas Green Show in Salem, which began when Dale first volunteered to be in charge of installing hundreds of Christmas trees in their stands. With a ready smile and a willing hand, Dale was known as a fixit man who was always willing to help family, friends, neighbors and strangers with a positive, optimistic attitude and contagious enthusiasm. Dale is survived by his wife, Geneva of Salem Oregon. They would have been married for 70 years in January. He is also survived by his daughter, Genne Sherman, and her husband, Dick, of McMinnville; his son, Michael Powell, and his wife, Anni, of Salem; and his daughter, Kathy Baer, and her husband, Mark, of Salem. He and Geneva also leave to our care 6 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. There will be an Honor Guard service at Willamette National Cemetery at 2:30 on Friday, November 18th, and a Celebration of Life at Jason Lee United Methodist Church, in Salem, Oregon, on Saturday, November 19th, at 11:00 a.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the Youth Scholarship Program of the Optimist Club of Salem, or Jason Lee United Methodist Church. Published in the Salem, Oregon Statesman Journal on November 8, 2011.
