I miss my father, but I shall see him again. I know Jesus has welcomed him and said, “Well done good and faithful servant.” My father lived in an age when caring was going out of style. Yet he continued to care. In the age of “do your own thing,” he still cared. He cared about his wife and sons, his relationship with God, his extended family and friends, even people he did not know, he still cared for. My father’s decisions were not made lightly or selfishly. He was willing to sacrifice. He went without many things for the sake of his family. He worked through the worst weather imaginable, storms other people would not even step outside in, he worked through because he cared. Years ago he decided that Mom should know how to take care of herself. He felt she should know how to pay the bills, drive a manual shift, deal with contractors, discipline her sons and do so many other things she might need to do someday. It may have been easier not to teach her these things, but he taught her because he cared. He wanted to provide the best future possible for his sons, not the easiest for us, or for him, but the best, because he cared. We did not make it easy on him, we were rebellious, but he did not give up, because he cared. My father often preached the Gospel to family, friends, acquaintances and even clergy. This was not a popular or easy thing to do, but he did it because he cared. My father wrote a letter of protest to the government during the Vietnam War. He did it because he cared. My father cared about doing a good job, even at work. Imagine that, a guy that cared enough to work hard. He always worked so that he could be proud of the results. He taught his sons that while you work it may be boring, or irritating, or even downright painful, but once you were done, you could be proud of what you did, and the pain would go away. Much more recently he taught us the same thing about dying. How could a man care so much? My father made a good pot of coffee. Did he ever put on a fresh pot of coffee for you? He did it because he loved you. My father sure could sing. Did he ever sing for you? He did it because he loved you. My father knew his way around electrical stuff. Did he ever do any wiring for you? He did it because he loved you. My father was hospitable. Did he ever feed you? Give you a cold refreshing drink? He did it because he loved you. My father knew a lot of stuff. Did he ever teach you anything? He did it because he loved you. My father could speak his mind. Did he ever have harsh words for you? He did it because he loved you. My father knew the value of a kind word. Did he ever comfort you? He did it because he loved you. My father cared so much because he loved so much. Now more than ever I want to be like my father.ADVERTISEMENT BYLooking for more information?
