Ruth Lorraine (Ruether) Olson was born on April 12, 1920 in Flat River (now Park Hills), St. Francois County, Missouri United States to Lucille (Yarbrough) Jones-Ruether-Price-Daugherty and Carl Henry Ruether. She married Lloyd Wayne Olson, and had children Jerry Wayne Olson, William Lloyd Olson, and LCpl Steven Ricky Olson. Ruth Olson died at age 94 years old on May 20, 2014 in Saint Clair, Franklin County.

In 1920, in the year that Ruth Lorraine (Ruether) Olson was born, on November 2, radio station KDKA began broadcasting in Pittsburgh, PA. This was the first commercial radio broadcast in the United States. Westinghouse, a leading manufacturer of radios and the backer of the station, chose the date because of the Presidential election. People liked it because they could hear about the results of the election between Harding and Cox before the morning papers arrived.
