Sarah "Sally" McCoy 1829 - 1890

Sarah Mccoy was born in 1829 in Pike County, Kentucky. She was married to Randolph "Old Randall" Mccoy, and had children Josephine McCoy, James H. McCoy, John Tolbert McCoy, Lilburn Mccoy, Samuel McCoy, Alafair McCoy, Rosana Mccoy, Calvin Mccoy, Pharmer McCoy, Randolph Bud McCoy Jr, William Bill Mccoy, Twinville (Mccoy), Adelaide Mccoy, Fannie Mccoy, and Floyd McCoy. Sarah Mccoy died at age 61 years old in 1890.

    Sarah was born to Samuel McCoy (1782-1855) and Elizabeth Davis. She had 3 siblings, John McCoy (1806-?), Asa Harmon McCoy (1809-1884), and William McCoy (1811-?), as well as two half siblings Samuel McCoy (1782-1855) and Benjamin McCoy. Randolph and Sarah McCoy married in the year 1849 and had 17 children together, some that lived and others that sadly did not survive. The children include: Josephine McCoy (1848-?), James "Jim" McCoy (1849-1929), Floyd McCoy (1853-1928), Tolbert McCoy (1854-1882), Lilburn McCoy (1855-?), Samuel II McCoy (1856-1921), an infant girl who did not survive (1857-1857), Alifair McCoy (1858-1888), Roseanna McCoy (1859-1889), Calvin McCoy (1862-1888), Pharmer McCoy (1863-1882), Randolph "Bud" McCoy (1864-1882), William "Bill" McCoy (1866-?) Trinvilla "Trinnie" McCoy (1868-1921), Adelaide McCoy (1870-1898), Fannie McCoy (1873-1943).

In 1829, in the year that Sarah "Sally" McCoy was born, on May 6th, the patent for an instrument called an "accordion" was applied for by German citizen Cyrill Demian. The patent described the accordion this way: "Its appearance essentially consists of a little box with feathers of metal plates and bellows fixed to it, in such a way that it can easily be carried, and therefore traveling visitors to the country will appreciate the instrument."

In 1843, Sarah was merely 14 years old when on January 31st, the Virginia Minstrels - also called the Virginia Serenaders - performed the first minstrel show. The whole troupe appeared in blackface. They were famous for the songs "Jimmy Crack Corn" and "Old Dan Tucker".
