In 1824, in the year that Tharsile (Tétreault) Martin was born, in May through July, King Kamehameha II of Hawaii and his wife Queen Kamāmalu - who was his half-sister - travelled for a state visit to London. While in London, they both contracted measles and died a week apart.

In 1841, Tharsile was 17 years old when on February 4th, James Morris wrote about Groundhog Day in his diary - the first known reference to the day in North America. He wrote: "Last Tuesday, the 2nd, was Candlemas day, the day on which, according to the Germans, the Groundhog peeps out of his winter quarters and if he sees his shadow he pops back for another six weeks nap, but if the day be cloudy he remains out, as the weather is to be moderate."
