1800 - He was 79 years old when Alessandro Volta presented his findings about the first electrical battery, proving that electricity could be generated chemically and debunking the widely held theory that electricity was generated solely by living beings.

1814 - At the age of 93 years old, William was alive when mechanical engineer George Stephenson - who taught himself to read and write at age 18 - built the first practical steam locomotive. Named Blücher, the train was built to haul coal. It could haul 30 tons of coal up a hill at 4 mph.

1818 - At the age of 97 years old, William was alive when on March 22nd, Easter Day fell on the earliest possible date in western Christianity. This won't happen again until 2285.

1819 - He was 98 years old when on February 22nd, Spain ceded Florida to the United States. The United States agreed to give up any claims on Spanish Texas and pay Spain $5,000,000. Called the Adams–Onís Treaty of 1819, it lasted only 183 days - until Spain recognized the independence of Mexico.

1825 - In the year of William Farthing's passing, on March 4th, John Quincy Adams was sworn in as the sixth President of the United States. His father, John Adams, was the second President of the United States and he was the only President who didn't win outright in the general election but was voted in by the House of Representatives.
