He served in the Army until his discharge date of October 18, 1945.

At the time of his enlistment, Niederst held the rank of Private, Selectee (enlisted men), which was a common rank for new recruits. He underwent basic training and then was likely assigned to a specific unit for further training and deployment. The terms of Niederst's enlistment were "for the duration of the war or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law."
