Alfred A. Greenhood was born in Baltimore,Maryland August 3, 1914 to Theodore Greenhood and Rose Simon Greenhood. Alfred attended Baltimore city schools and Johns Hopkins University. He was in the United States Army under General Anthony Clement "Nuts" McAuliffe. He served directly under General McAuliffe and earned fame defending Bastogne, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. He married Dena Katz of Portsmouth Virginia and founded Greenhood Shoe Company and is credited with creating the first self-service retail shoe stores in the early 1950’s. Alfred was also involved in Foodservice, restaurants and catering in the early 1960’s and Catalog Showroom retailing in the early 1970’s. Alfred was a community leader and well respected and known for his amazing sense of humor and generosity to his community. Alfred and Dena had two children, Theodora Faye Greenhood and Charles Michael Greenhood. Alfred passed away on February 3, 1980 at the age of 65.
