Alice Erles as a baby with her mother Taneko in 1951. This photo was taken while Alice's father, Leo, was doing his tour of duty with the US Army during the Korean War. When the Korean War broke out in June 1950, Leo was forced to leave his then-pregnant wife Taneko in July 1950. Alice was born in November of that year and only saw her father briefly when she was 4 months old and he returned to Japan for a week of R&R. When his tour in Korea was finished a year later, Leo returned to their home in Osaka. Settling in to life as a family wasn't always easy. When Leo told little Alice he was her Daddy, Alice refused to believe him at first. She pointed to his photo on the desk as the only Daddy she knew.
