Hugh John Devore
Professional Football and College Coach. Born in Newark, New Jersey, he played tight end football at and graduated from Notre Dame in 1933. Upon graduating from Notre Dame, he stayed on as the freshman football coach an also as head coach at Providence College (1938-41), Holy Cross, in 1942, returned to Notre Dame, (1943-45), at St. Bonaventure College, (1946-49) and New York University, (1950-52). In 1953, he was assistant coach with the Green Bay Packers and head couch of the Philadelphia Eagles, (1956-57). Once again he returned as a coach for Notre Dame, (1958-64) and his last coaching job was as an assistant with the Houston Oilers, (1966-70). He then went on to work as promotions director for the Houston Sports Association, until retiring in 1986. He died at age 82 in Edmond, Oklahoma.
