John Wright Waddell was one of seven children born to William and Amanda Izard Waddill, in Fayette Co., Texas. Little is known of his childhood. When John was a young man he became a cowboy, driving cattle between Texas to Nebraska. He had an Aunt living in Gordon, NE where John stayed at the end of the drives.
This where he met and courted Cora Eda Townsend. Although he was viewed by her family as ‘penniless’, love prevailed and they were married on April 3, 1901 in Valentine, Nebraska. The couple began their married life living with Aunt Lou Izzard, until they were able to purchase homestead land near Cora’s brother Charlie. When the homestead was sold for a profit John took his growing family of five to Plainview, Texas in 1905-7.
John supported the family by building homes and doing other carpentry. In 1907-08 there was another move to Floyd Co., near Lockney, Texas, where three more children were born.
In 1916 the family moved to Hale Co, establishing their own town when they moved a schoolhouse twenty miles from Harmony, to stand as a centerpiece. The one room building was divided into four rooms, the family of eight living in one of these rooms. The other rooms used for school and civic functions of Wilson, Texas.
In 1927, the family moved to Plainview, Texas so the children could attend high school. When the children had all grown and left home, in 1932 John and Cora moved to Ellen, Texas. John continued farming and Cora was busy with her sewing and active in church.
The couple moved a few more times but finally landed in Rogers, Arkansas, where they living very happily. As they aged their struggled with health concerns and Cora was moved to a health care facility in Amherst, TX. John moved in with his youngest daughter Wilma, but after several strokes he was also moved to the facility in Amherst to be with Cora. They shared a room until her death in 1957. John was in a coma for nearly a year before he died on August 4, 1959.

I am finally retired and able to research families nearly fulltime, a lifetime passion of mine. I have hundred of documents, letters and family records collected for 50+ years.
My birth family name was Townsend, and we arrived in America before the Mayflower, so research was less complicated. I also have extensive records for Buchan, Chatfield, Haushalter, Brandemuehl, Moeller, Kronz, Stroud, and Rotter. In just one year I photographed more than 8,000 headstones, in an effort to help others find family members.
