Captain Joseph W. Ricketts was a much-loved, compassionate man. He was a wonderful battlefield tactician and showed great promise as an officer. In showing compassion toward not only his fellow men, but to animals as well, expressing great distress at the wounding of horses on the battlefield and doing his utmost to ease their misery, he gained the loyalty and affection of many of the men he commanded. His sense of humor was rivaled only by his bravery and he made many friends in Company K. He is remembered with honor and respect.
