Author. A writer of children's fantasy fiction books, he is best known for the "Chronicles of Prydain" series and won the Newbery Medal for "The High King" in 1969. Another of his novels, "The Black Cauldron", was made into a 1985 Walt Disney Studios animated motion picture. After serving in the United States Army during World War II, he attended the University of Paris. His first book, "And Let the Credit Go", was published in 1955. Some of his other notable works include "My Five Tigers" (1956), "The Truthful Harp" (1967), "The Marvelous Misadventure of Sebastian" (1970), "The King's Fountain" (1971), "The Cat Who Wished to Be a Man" (1973), and "Dream-of-Jade: The Emperor's Cat" (2005). Lloyd Alexander is the author of several best selling fantasy series. His most famous works include the Chronicles of Prydain, which were inspired by Welsh mythology. He won the Newbery Medal for the fifth book in the series, "The High King." The second book of the series, "The Black Cauldron" was the basis of the Disney film, and won a Newbery Honor Award. He also wrote the Vesper Holly adventures, the Westmark trilogy, and "The Arkadians." He has written books inspired by Greek, African, Chinese and Persian mythology. He lived in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania.
