Shelby Madden was born on February 13th, 1939 in Harlan County, Kentucky, to George R. Madden Sr. (1914 - 1999) and Eileen Teen Hensley (1923 - 1987). Both of his parents were born in Kentucky. Shelby had eight siblings: Lillian, George R. "Ronnie", James William "Jabo", Ronnie and Donnie, who were twins, Winston Cox, Thelma Jean, and one more brother. Shelby married Edith Jones (1938 - 2022) in September of 1957 in Harlan County, Kentucky and they had five children: three daughters, including Connie (1962 - 2017), Gwendolyn, and Amber, and two sons, Bruce and John.
