A portrait of Walt Whitman in 1887. Whitman was born in 1819 and died in 1902. You can see other pictures of him on AncientFaces but this photo reminds me of Santa Claus!
Walt Whitman was a famous American poet and journalist, perhaps best known for his poetry collection "Leaves of Grass."

Walt Whitman in 1864, at the age of 45.
Born on Long Island, Walt Whitman was a famous essayist, journalist, and poet even during his own lifetime. Today, he is best known for Leaves of Grass. And for the fact that you have to read his writings in school! Remember "O Captain! My Captain!"? He wrote this poem about the death of Abraham Lincoln.
He died in 1892 at the age of 73 and was a much more interesting (and multifaceted) man than we learned in school

Children Nigel Cholmeley-Jones and Jeanette Cholmeley-Jones with poet Walt Whitman. The children were the niece and nephew of Jeannette Gilder, editor of The Critic and a friend to both Cox (the photographer) and Whitman. Gilder had delivered the frail poet to the photographer’s studio. He had just given a lecture on Abraham Lincoln.
Best known for Leaves of Grass, Walt Whitman was a man of his times: complex, active, and with an interesting view of life. This photo was taken 5 years before he died.
In a newly discovered letter from Whitman to Gilder, he wrote:
328 Mickle Street
Camden New Jersey Sept. 13 Evn’g
Cox’s photos: came today & I have written my name on them & sent them back (addressing the package to William Carey, Century office)—All are good, but the one I like best is a head with hat on, the photo marked No 3—the pictures with the children come out first-rate—Give my love to the dear girl & boy & tell them I remember them well—I am here like an old hulk driven up on the sand or floating with spars & rigging all gone, & no more voyaging—Love to Watson and Joe
Walt Whitman

On the lawn of the Williams' house from left to right: Mrs. Francis Howard Williams (face scratched out), Walt Whitman with Aubrey Williams, Marguerite (called Daisy) Williams, and Churchill Williams with gun.
Walt Whitman, of course, was a celebrated American poet. Francis Howard Williams (his family is pictured) was also a poet. Churchill Williams (perhaps the young boy pictured?) was a novelist.
Walt Whitman died on March 26, 1892. On that day, Francis Howard Williams wrote a poem to him:
DARKNESS and death? Nay, Pioneer, for thee
The day of deeper vision has begun;
There is no darkness for the central sun
Nor any death for immortality.
At last the song of all fair songs that be,
At last the guerdon of a race well run,
The upswelling joy to know the victory won,
The riverâs rapture when it finds the sea.
Ah, thou art wrought in an heroic mould,
The modern man upon whose brow yet stays
A gleam of glory from the age of gold,â
A diadem which all the gods have kissed.
Hail and farewell! flower of the antique days,â
Democracyâs divine protagonist. March 26, 1892.
