  • Introduction

    Arnold Spelka's, or Spilka's - spellings differ - parents were Samuel Spilka (1878 - 1943) born in Galicia and Lena Leie "Ida" Altner or Oltner - again, spellings differ - (1877 - 1954), also born in Galicia. He had siblings Ida, Lillie, Celia, Julius, Murrow, and Rosalind. When Arnold was 2, the family was living in the Bronx, New York and their native language was Yiddish. Dad Samuel was in the cigar business. Arnold attended the Art Student's League and studied drawing. He became an illustrator and was much in demand for his services, drawing for such books as A Rumbudgin of Nonsense (1970) a picture book of nonsense verse, as well as A Lion I Can Do Without (1964), And the Frog Went Blah (1972), and Bumples, Fumdidlers, and Jellybeans (1996). He also wrote his own poems like "Don't Tell Me That I Talk Too Much" and "Flowers are a Silly Bunch". The University of Minnesota holds some of his papers and drawings.
