British - Robert and Nellie Brain, his grandfather and grandmother on his mother's side, came to America in the 1800s. His grandfather came first and then sent for his grandmother, who was 16 at the time and sat on a small trunk filled with the only possessions she brought with her. The trunk is dented from her trip and still in existence within the family. His mother, Edith Brain Filer, was born in 1895 and had five children, Robert, Verna, Alfred, Donald and Dana. She was a school teacher and a member of the Christian Church in Mather Pa for many years.

Donald E. Filer was affectionately called "Duck" by all who knew and loved him. He was "Pappy Duck" to the grandkids. He was an accomplished pianist with vocal talent to match and could dance the polka with the best of them. He was fun-loving, gregarious, extremely intelligent and had an affinity for history, learning and classical music. Generous to a fault and just as ornery, he was adored and beloved by all his children and grandchildren. When in his presence, all your cares seemed to fade into the distance. He was a man of integrity, a great humanitarian, treating every sentient being with dignity and respect. He was ahead of his time and encouraged his daughters to pursue an education and be and do anything their soul could dream of. He believed in equality for everyone: young or old, rich or poor, black or white, strong or weak. His compassion knew no bounds, especially for children, the vulnerable and downtrodden and animals. Christmas was his favorite time of year and he loved decorating the tree with water-filled baubles and electric toy trains. His sharp wit and self-deprecating humor was irresistibly endearing and you never left his home without a full belly and tears from laughter. Everyone was welcome and there was never a need to knock. He loved the world and the world loved him back. We will never forget you, Dad.

Thank you, Daniel. Yes, he was one in a million, for sure. To lose him was heartbreaking, but remembering him always puts a smile in my heart. Us adult kids speak of him often and there's always laughter when we do. :)
Ah, that's wonderful! I love when someone makes such a profound impact on the people in his/her life that they impact us way after their passing.
