9 Memories, Stories & Photos about Homer

Homer and Kate (Stevens) Sheeks
Homer and Kate (Stevens) Sheeks
Homer and Kate (Stevens) Sheeks married 10 Feb 1886 in Lawrence County, Indiana. They moved to Stuttgart, Arkansas where Homer farmed and operated a rice threshing outfit. They had three children: Arthur D. Sheeks, Harry A. Sheeks, and Reath Sheeks, whose pictures may be found elsewhere on this site. They also helped raise Harry's two sons when he was widowed. Eventually Homer and Kate divorced and she returned to Mitchell, Indiana with her grandsons whom she supported by running a boarding house. Their sons and grandsons continued to visit Homer as they were growing up. Homer returned to Mitchell three years before his death in 1942 and lived with his brother, Albert. Katie died in 1955.

See also the picture of Malinda Payne Sheeks with her daughter-in-law and her son's children, on the front porch of an identical house. In the front, from left to right: Reath Sheeks, Homer Sheeks, and his wife, Kate (Stevens), with probably their first grandchild, Roy C. Sheeks, on her lap.
In the rear, left to right, Harry A. Sheeks, Arthur D. Sheeks and his wife, Tess (Walton).
All those here, except for Kate and Tess, are buried at the Sheeks Cemetery in Mitchell, Indiana. Kate is buried at the Mitchell City Cemetery. I wish to thank Donna Beacher ([contact link]) for this picture.

Wade, Jesse, Homer, & Asa
Wade, Jesse, Homer, & Asa
Since Asa Neal and Jesse Wm Mann are in this picture with Homer Sheeks, I think it was taken in Indiana, not in Arkansas. Homer is horsing around, wearing a bib. Amused, his grandson James Wade Sheeks, better known as Wade, is sitting on the left. Wade was born 7 July, 1915 in Stuttgart, Arkansas, died 7 Sep 1950 near Little Rock, Lincoln County, Arkansas, and is buried in the Sheeks Cemetery, Mitchell, IN with his father, Harry A. Sheeks. Wade was an epileptic and never married. He had an older brother, Wayne (8 Jan 1914-25 Oct 1960). When Wade's mother, Stella Ziegler, died, Harry left his two sons with his mother, Mrs. Homer (Kate Stephens) Sheeks, who had divorced his father, and was running a boarding house in Mitchell. Then Harry went to Arkansas where his father lived, and married Bessie Little, and they had six daughters: Mary; Selma; Anna Jean; Mildred; Hazel; and Helen.

Reath A. Sheeks Going Fishing With His Father
Reath A. Sheeks Going Fishing With His Father
Homer sent this picture postcard to John Edwin Carr and described Reath as "the handsome feller" standing and himself as the "little boy sitting in the right hand boat." He is the one who is wearing a white shirt & suspenders. I have learned that the boy sitting in the front behind Reath was Emery Sheeks. I do not know the names of his parents

Reath eventually married an Ellen Fields on 20 Dec 1924, and they had one son, Carol L. Sheeks, who had two children. Reath was a heavy equipment operator and one day, while razing the Old Terre Haute Brewing Company on the third floor, a wall and the floor collapsed under him and he and the machine fell to the second floor. He was recovered but he had been fatally injured and died 7 Nov 1961.

The Arkansas Home of Homer Sheeks & Kate (Stephens)
The Arkansas Home of Homer Sheeks & Kate (Stephens)
Seated on the porch of this beautiful spacious home, on the near left is friend, Tom Burlington. Seated on a swing on the right side of the porch is Kate, Homer's wife. Standing in front of the house is Homer Sheeks. Homer and Kate had three sons all born in Indiana, before they moved to Arkansas: Arthur D. Sheeks (Dec 1888-1946); Harry A. Sheeks (23 Sep 1894-Jan 1942) and Reath A. Sheeks (9 Aug 1900-7 Nov 1961). However they divorced. She returned to Mitchell, Indiana, ran a boarding house, and raised her two grandsons, Wayne and Wade Sheeks. I have many more pictures of Homer, several sent to John Edwin Carr, who was attending The Indiana State School for the Deaf, showing that Homer loved fishing, duck hunting, etc. and had several employees running big farming equipment, rice thrashing, etc. One of the cards says it shows Homer's oufit, one mile to Olmitz, Kansas.
