"Col. Robert Morrison Sheeks, USAF (Ret.), of San Antonio, passed away Tuesday, September 13, 2005 after a long illness. He was born October 5, 1917 in Huron, Dakota to George C. Sheeks and Elizabeth Cornish Sheeks. Col. Sheeks was secretary of his class 41-H at Kelly AFB. This class had annual reunions and raised funds to aid the development of Freedom House at Air Force Village. He was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church. Col. Sheeks was a member of the Daedalians and a comptroller of the McNay Art Museum under the direction of John Leeper. He assisted Boeing Magazine with obtaining photos for Armed Forces Day. Col. Sheeks is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Sarah 'Betsy' Elizabeth Sheeks of San Antonio, Texas, his son, Robert Morrison Sheeks, II of Manchaca, Texas; his sister, Mrs. Ed Law of San Diego, California; nieces and nephews including Diane, Mary, Tom Grove and Bill Swan. Col. Sheeks was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by his family. The Sheeks family would like to offer their gratitude to VNA Hospice, Mary Tisdale, Peggy Wolfe and John De La Garza. Special thanks to Alicia Ramirez for her loving care and support during Bob's final days. MEMORIAL SERVICE MONDAY SEPTEMBER 19, 2005 1:30 P.M. FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 404 NORTH ALAMO Rev. George Struch officiating. Reception to follow the memorial service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's Presbyterian Church, c/o Tom Heger, P.O. They had eight children: Clara Eva who married Harry Gessells Hardenbrook; Gertie who married Robert Moreland Lunday; Mertie, her twin, who married 1) Fred James and 2)Jacob aka Jake DeYoung; George Crawford who married Elizabeth Cornish; Ruth who married Lloyd G. Hardie; Mabel Fern who married 1) William Makey and
2) Alvia Hugh Alexander MacDonald; Paul Preston who married Ruth Spitznas; and Mary Leola who married Waldo Augustus Shinn.
Son Paul Preston Sheeks wrote in a newsletter that his parents moved from a farm at Grand Rapids, ND to Wahpeton, ND and later to Mitchell, SD, so that their children could attend Methodist colleges in Wahpeton and Mitchell. Paul was the one who provided all their names. Hugh, the father, died 6 March 1934 in Boulder, CO. Rosa died 30 July 1938 in Los Angeles, CA.
I want to thank Mary Giera for sending me this picture, which she says was taken in 1933. Gwen ... wrote that "the photo was taken in Colorado, probably at the Epworth Methodist Church in Denver where Hugh and Rosa lived while being the church caretakers in excange for rent and utilities."
I also want to thank Gwen for filling in the full names of the children and their spouses as well as the dates and locations of the deaths of Hugh and Rosa.

Another son, Reath, is not in the picture. He may have been with his father.

HE DIED AT THE BATTLE OF SABINE CROSSROADS IN LOUISIANA
WHILE CARRYING THE COLORS OF HIS COUNTRY.
ACCORDING TO ALBERT FIELDS, DAVID’S GRANDSON: “THE BULLET THAT HIT HIM REPORTEDLY SPLIT THE STANDARD…HE WAS CARRYING…AS JOHN W. FELL, HE WAS ABLE TO STICK THE
BROKEN PART ON WHICH THE FLAG WAS ATTACHED INTO THE
GROUND SO THAT THE STANDARD WAS ERECT AND THE FLAG WAVING.”
JOHN IS BURIED IN MITCHELL AT THE SHEEKS CEMETERY
BY HIS PARENTS.

Robert married Gertie Sheeks on 5 Nov 1898 in her parents' home in Wahpeton, ND. They had seven children. She was born 14 Dec 1880 in Dover,l Olmstead Co, MN a twin to Mertie. She died 14 Oct 1947 in Los Angeles and is buried with her husband.
