A photo of a younger Hugh Sheeks, 1850-1934, Son of George Canote Sheeks & Artamoia Crawford. Hugh was born 9 Oct 1850, the son of George Canote Sheeks and Artamoia or Artimecia Crawford,whereas his wife Rosa Viviahn was born in Switzerland. They had eight children: Clara Eva who married Harry Gessells Hardenbrook; Gertie who married Robert Morland Lunday; Mertie, her twin, who married 1) Fred James and 2)Jacob aka Jake DeYoung; George Crawford who married Elizabeth Cornish; Ruth who married Lloyd G. Hardie; Mabel Fern who married 1) William Makey and 2) Alvia Hugh Alexander MacDonald; Paul Preston who married Ruth Spitznas; and Mary Leola who married Waldo Augustus Shinn. Son Paul Preston Sheeks wrote in a newsletter that his parents moved from a farm at Grand Rapids, ND to Wahpeton, ND and later to Mitchell, SD, so that their children could attend Methodist colleges in Wahpeton and Mitchell. Paul was the one who provided all their names. Hugh, the father, died 6 March 1934 in Boulder, Colorado. Rosa died 30 July 1938 in Los Angeles, California. I want to thank Mary Giera for sending me this picture. I also want to thank Gwen ... for sending me the full names of all the children and their spouses, and the dates and locations of the deaths of their parents, Hugh and Rosa.

"Col. Robert Morrison Sheeks, USAF (Ret.), of San Antonio, passed away Tuesday, September 13, 2005 after a long illness. He was born October 5, 1917 in Huron, Dakota to George C. Sheeks and Elizabeth Cornish Sheeks. Col. Sheeks was secretary of his class 41-H at Kelly AFB. This class had annual reunions and raised funds to aid the development of Freedom House at Air Force Village. He was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church. Col. Sheeks was a member of the Daedalians and a comptroller of the McNay Art Museum under the direction of John Leeper. He assisted Boeing Magazine with obtaining photos for Armed Forces Day. Col. Sheeks is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Sarah 'Betsy' Elizabeth Sheeks of San Antonio, Texas, his son, Robert Morrison Sheeks, II of Manchaca, Texas; his sister, Mrs. Ed Law of San Diego, California; nieces and nephews including Diane, Mary, Tom Grove and Bill Swan. Sheeks Reunion, 1918/1919, Part 1
This picture is a companion to one that has labels on every person for identification that is also on this site. As I said before, looking at Madeline Neal, and the fact that there is next to no young men in the picture, it makes me think it was taken in 1918 or 1919 during World War I, when most young men were called into service.
I need help identifying most of the people in this picture. They could be Sheeks, Colglaziers, Fields, Basses, etc., all interelated.

Sheeks Reunion, 1918/1919, Part 2
This photo has a numbered label on each person, to facilitate identification. It is a companion to another picture which precedes it, that has no labels. Looking at Madeline Neal and the fact that there are next to no young men in the picture, I think it was taken in 1918 or 1919 during World War I, when most young men were drafted into service.

George Canote Sheeks 1809-1843 of Kentucky, Indiana, and Minnesota
George (18 Feb 1809-30 June 1843) the son of George Sheeks and Elizabeth (Canote), was born in Wayne County, Kentucky, but his parents moved the family to Lawrence County, Indiana in 1816. George married Artamoia Crawford (25 Aug 1816-3 Oct 1863) of Lawrence County, Indiana on 4 June 1833. They had 12 children: Sampson, who married Rebecca Elrod; Lucina, who married William Cunningham; Elijah H., who married Elliott J. Deboe; Elizah, who married a Mr. Wright; Franklin; William; Wells; John; Oliver P.; Hugh, who married Rosa Vivian ----; Sarah, who married a Mr. Drake, and Mary. Artamoia's name has also been found as Artimeia, Artimecia, and Artimesia. Elijah and Elizah above were twins.
The Sheeks House at the Spring Mill State Park Pioneer Village in Lawrence Co, Indiana, View 1
This is a picture of the Sheeks House taken in September 2005 showing the two ends of the building, the two stories, the breezeway, the kitchen on the left, and people waiting in line to go in and see the inside. There are two pictures of David L. Sheeks on display and one of Hiram Spencer, whose daughter Judith married one of David's sons, Isom. David was one of the sons of Elizabeth (Canote) and George Sheeks who built the house.
There are also some items of furniture, some tools George used, and other mementos.

A photo of the Sheeks House at the Spring Mill State Park Pioneer Village in Lawrence Co, Indiana, View 2. George Sheeks of Rowan County, North Carolina and Kentucky built this house, then moved his family there in 1816. The house was moved from its original location not too far away to the park for display. This view shows the two stories of the house. Beside the door is a plaque saying "Sheeks House, Erected 1816." A sign "Weaver" is above the door indicating that at certain times a weaver comes to the house and displays the technique used for weaving cloth, rugs, bed coverlets, etc. on the original weaving loom George built for his wife. I am grateful to my son, Dr. Bruce E. Carl, for taking these pictures Labor Day weekend in 2005.
The Weaving Loom That George Sheeks Made For His Wife Elizabeth (Canote) Sheeks
This is a picture taken about Sept 3, 2005 of the weaving loom inside the Sheeks House at Spring Mill State Park Pioner Village. The loom is still in use by a skilled weaver who periodically demonstrates how it works, making items which are sold to visitors. There is another picture on this site that shows a coverlet believed to have been made on this weaving loom.

Lois Anne (Sheeks) Cramer At the Sheeks House
In 1984, Lois Anne visited Sheeks relatives with whom she became acquainted only when she came to Indiana to meet them and visit the Sheeks House at the Spring Mill State Park Pioneer Village. She won the hearts of all who met her. Their hearts were broken when it was learned that she had died of lung cancer Sep 3, 1989. They have only her letters and this picture and another on this site to remember her by.
Ralph and Lois Anne (Sheeks) Cramer
This picture was taken in May, 1987. Lois Anne died 3 Sep 1989 of lung cancer. She had three stepchildren. I never met her but am indebted to her for her years of dedicated genealogical research regarding the Sheeks family. I have another picture of her on this site showing her at the Sheeks House in the Spring Mill State Park Pioneer Village in Mitchell, Indiana. Late in life, she found another hobby, that of dressing up as a clown and entertaining children "of all ages."

Homer and Kate (Stevens) Sheeks
Homer and Kate (Stevens) Sheeks married 10 Feb 1886 in Lawrence County, Indiana. They moved to Stuttgart, Arkansas where Homer farmed and operated a rice threshing outfit. They had three children: Arthur D. Sheeks, Harry A. Sheeks, and Reath Sheeks, whose pictures may be found elsewhere on this site. They also helped raise Harry's two sons when he was widowed. Eventually Homer and Kate divorced and she returned to Mitchell, Indiana with her grandsons whom she supported by running a boarding house. Their sons and grandsons continued to visit Homer as they were growing up. Homer returned to Mitchell three years before his death in 1942 and lived with his brother, Albert. Katie died in 1955.

ELDEST CHILD OF DAVID L. SHEEKS AND SYLVANIA (LEWIS),
HE DIED AT THE BATTLE OF SABINE CROSSROADS IN LOUISIANA
WHILE CARRYING THE COLORS OF HIS COUNTRY.

Nita Clark took this picture of a picture of David on display at the Sheeks House, which his father had built and where David was born and raised along with five brothers and six sisters. He was the son of George Sheeks and Elizabeth (Canote). While becoming one of the wealthiest men in the county, he married three times: 1) Sylvania Cynthiana Lewis, by whom he had nine children: John W., Delbert, Edward, Martha, Isom, Franklin P., unnamed twins, one male and one female, who died in infancy, and Priscilla; 2) Susan Horsey, by whom he had ten children: Mary, George, Halbert, Laura, Homer, David, Rose, Albert, Lawrence, and Wade; and 3) Malinda Payne, by whom he had two children, Sallie and Everett.

Robert was born abt 26 Feb 1868 in either Ballyroney or Drumadonald, County Down, North Ireland. He sailed from Liverpool, England in March 1886 aboard the ship Lord Clive and arrived in Philadelphia, PA April 9, 1886. He became a naturalized citizen in Fargo, ND April 10, 1890. He graduated from the Dakota Business College and became a grocer, then a prosperous executive with the Leach Gamble Company in Wahpeton, North Dakota. He died 18 July 1944 in Los Angeles, CA and is buried at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale.
Robert married Gertie Sheeks on 5 Nov 1898 in her parents' home in Wahpeton, ND. They had seven children. She was born 14 Dec 1880 in Dover,l Olmstead Co, MN a twin to Mertie. She died 14 Oct 1947 in Los Angeles and is buried with her husband.

George Canote Sheeks was born 18 Feb 1809 in Wayne Co, KY to George and Elizabeth (Canote) Sheeks and moved with his parents and siblings first near Orleans in Orange Co, IN, then to a new home his father had built in Marion Twp, Lawrence Co, IN. He had 5 brothers and six sisters. George married Artemesia Crawford of Lawrence County 4 June 1833 and they had 12 children: Sampson, Lucina, twins Elijah H. and Elizah, Franklin, William, Wells, John, Oliver P., Hugh, Sarah, and Mary. Artemesia was aka Artemoia, Artimeia, and Artemecia. She was born 25 Aug 1816 and died 3 Oct 1863. After her death, George next married Sarah Elizabeth Taylor in 1864 in Dover, MN. On 10 Feb 1818, Rosannah's husband, Joseph Albin (18 Feb 1794-24 June 1863) married Eliza Marsh, his first wife, daughter of Wm Marsh, in Harrison County, Indiana. They had 3 children: Jane, William M., and George Wesley, left behind when Eliza died. Joseph then married Rosannah Sheeks (3 June 1805-22 March 1881) on 29 April 1824. She and her husband lived in Lawrence County for about ten years, then moved to Putnam County. They had 12 children: Lavinia, John Nelson, Elizabeth, Henry, Isaac Newton, Sarah A., Cynthia, Malinda, James Madison, Matilda, Felix Grundy, and Joseph Taylor. Joseph, Jane, his eldest daughter, who remained unmarried, and Rosannah share the same tower type tombstone at the Bricks Chapel Cemetery in Monroe Twp, Putnam County, Indiana.
