JOHN WASHINGTON SHEEKS
(11 NOV 1843 - 8 APRIL 1864)

ELDEST CHILD OF DAVID L. SHEEKS AND SYLVANIA (LEWIS),
HE DIED AT THE BATTLE OF SABINE CROSSROADS IN LOUISIANA
WHILE CARRYING THE COLORS OF HIS COUNTRY.

ACCORDING TO ALBERT FIELDS, DAVID’S GRANDSON: “THE BULLET THAT HIT HIM REPORTEDLY SPLIT THE STANDARD…HE WAS CARRYING…AS JOHN W. FELL, HE WAS ABLE TO STICK THE
BROKEN PART ON WHICH THE FLAG WAS ATTACHED INTO THE
GROUND SO THAT THE STANDARD WAS ERECT AND THE FLAG WAVING.”

JOHN IS BURIED IN MITCHELL AT THE SHEEKS CEMETERY
BY HIS PARENTS.
