John L. Phillips died of natural causes on 31 May 2013. He had been ill and was suffering from emphysema as well as pneumonia. John was a proud member of the United States military forces, first serving in the Air Force and then in the Army, where he gave decades of dedicated service in active duty and then in the Reserves. John grew up in Weehawken, NJ, in or near The Shades section of the city. His parents were the former Hilda Gehse and John L. Phillips, of Germany and New Jersey, respectively. John was deeply influenced by Bridget Phillips, his great-grandmother. Though he never knew her, he spoke often of her with deep admiration for all she did in the life of his father. John worked in the electrical industry, as a teacher, teaching electronics at Denville Vo-Tech in Denville, NJ, and also working as a repairs person for the NJ State Police. His first wife, Lillian, died in 2002, They were married in 1951 and together had 6 children: John, Kathleen, Dawn, Heidi, Heather and Christian. They raised the family in Jersey City before eventually moving to Ringwood, after building their own home there. After Lillian's death in 2002, John remarried in 2004 to his second wife, Rosemary. They lived in Ramsey, NJ for several years before his death. John is survived by his wife, Rosemary, his children John, Kathleen, Dawn, Heidi, Heather and Christian, their respective spouses, and 13 grandchildren plus several cousins and their families. He was a beautiful soul and will be deeply missed.
