5 Memories, Stories & Photos about Martha

This is my mother's mother, Martha Love Barker. She was from Shawneetown, Illinois. Her parents were James Barker & Martha Patsey Love Emmitt. Her grandfather Rev Emmitt was a Methodist minister. Her brother Thomas sent the money for her & Aunt Mary & Uncle Emmett to go by riverboat to New Orleans, a ship to Panama where they crossed the Isthmus, and up to San Francisco by ship. They talked about fellow travelers eating monkey when they crossed Panama overland.

Bethel, would love to see if your Barkers are my Barkers. Had them in Shawneetown and other counties nearby. Mine came to IL from ME by way of KY ca 1818. They came with Thompson family. All the names you have mentioned and others, Tate, Carr, Phillips, Potter, etc were in their line in early 1800's. Moved around IL to several counties after 1830. PUTNAM, FULTON, MARION, CLAY, and JACKSON counties from 2nd generation. First Barker I remember was named Abel.

A photo of Martha B. Lewis at Dickmans Gallery in Sacramento. My grandmother arrived in San Francisco about 1861 with her sister Mary & brother Emmit. They went up the Sacramento River and were met by Uncle Thomas. Mary & Martha worked on riverboat at first for a man from Illinois. He gave all the Barker sisters a gold buckle. I still have her scrapbook of poems and clippings 'bought on Jan 12, 1862.' My cousin Eula still had one of the buckles when she died.

They were married by the Justice of the Peace H W Starr. She had 6 children: Mary Belle, Walter Nathaniel, James Emmit, William Samuel, Martha Josephine, and Lula Maude. She died of childbirth April 7, 1884 at the age of 44.

A photo of Mary & Martha Barker. My grandmother & her sister worked for Jeff Wilcox as housekeepers when they first came to California. They use to watch riverboats go by the mansion which overlooked the river. He gave them the gold buckles for Christmas made of Placer nuggets. Photo taken at Esterle's Gallery in Sacramento.

The belt buckles on those tiny, corseted waists are made of gold nuggets. Ahhhh . . . old California!

They are darling girls! Belt buckles of gold nuggets? Hopefully those became heirlooms for future family members! The history behind them is fun!

My mother, Martha Lewis, Aunt Belle Lewis, and Aunt Lou Lewis. I think this was probably taken about the time Aunt Belle was getting married and left the ranch. Their mother had died in 1884 which left Mama and Aunt Lou alone on the ranch with their father. It was a hard childhood and Mama didn't like to talk about it.
