He had seven siblings: five brothers, including Bobby and John; and two sisters, including Christine. He also had two half siblings: a brother Leslie L. Bess, Jr. and one half sister. Robert married three times: The first time, he married Patricia E. Palmer on December 27th, 1985 in Wilbarger County, Texas. They divorced on October 2nd, 1990 in Texas. They didn't have any children. The second time, he married Mary L. Gibson on October 13th, 1990, also in Wilbarger County. They had one daughter and divorced on April 3rd, 2000 in Texas. The third time, he married Joycelee Holt on May 16th, 2000 in Wichita County, Texas. They had one daughter and one son. Robert L. Bess died on July 17th, 2002 in Vernon, Texas at the age of 35 years old.
