Entrance To The Round Rock Cemetery, Round Rock, Williamson County, Texas
Round Rock Cemetery is located on Sam Bass Road. Among those buried here are Sam Bass and his fellow gangmember, Seaborn Barnes, on the far left side of the cemetery, and Williamson County Texas Deputy Sheriff Alijah W. Grimes, on the right side of the cemetery. Grimes and Barnes were both shot dead in the gun battle that took place July 19, 1878, when Grimes asked Bass, Barnes, and Frank Murphy to hand over their concealed guns, in Koppel's General Store. Sam died two days later on his 27th birthday, from the wounds he received in that gun battle. Frank Murphy escaped and was never apprehended.

The Tombstone of Sam Bass, Outlaw
The Tombstone of Sam Bass, Outlaw
This is the full view of Sam Bass's gray granite tombstone erected by the Sam Bass Historical Foundation. A closer view follows in the next picture.

Sam Bass was eulogized in his day because he was known as the "Robin Hood of the West." He rewarded those who did things for him, e.g., with a gold coin or a gold bar. As a result of his reputation, people would give posses who were looking for him, the wrong directions as to which way he was riding, to help him elude them. After he was fatally wounded in a gunbattle with the law in downtown Round Rock, he escaped with the help of his pal Frank Jackson, but finally had to give up due to the excruciating pain he was suffering. At his request, he was left sitting against a tree beside a road. Possees raced back and forth past him on the road and then finally stopped to question him. He told them their search was over, that he was Sam Bass. The other reason he was eulogized is because, during hours of interrogation, he would not tell where his fellow gang members were. Many books and articles have been written about him and still are. I have more notes about him, his birth family and relatives on www.rootsweb.com on my sites bcarl41 and bcarl112, because he was my first cousin, thrice removed. After I viewed his tombstone, I said a prayer for him and told him on behalf of the family I was sorry his life had turned out the way it did.

The Location Of The General Store That Sam Bass & His Gang Entered Planning To Rob A Bank
The Location Of The General Store That Sam Bass & His Gang Entered Planning To Rob A Bank
This building has the exact address (101 East Main Street), reported to be that of Koppel's General Store that Sam Bass and his gang entered to buy supplies and to case the bank nearby. Today it is a coffee shop. I do not know whether it has the same style as the original building. A. W. Grimes, the Williamson County Deputy Sheriff, was whistling when he entered the store, and while approaching the men, because they appeared to be carrying guns, which was against the law in town, was shot dead when he inquired about them. Deputy Moore was waiting at the door and others outside. When the gang members tried to escape, and wounded Moore, a gun battle ensued, spilling out into the street. Before he could escape, one of Sam's fellow gang members, Seaborn Barnes, was shot dead outside the store. Sam was badly injured, but was helped onto a horse by fellow gang member, Frank Jackson, and rode a distance out of town, before giving up. He was placed by a tree by the road, unable to go any further, eventually found and arrested, dying two days later.

Location Of The Bank Sam Bass & His Gang Planned To Rob
Location Of The Bank Sam Bass & His Gang Planned To Rob
This building is located in downtown Round Rock, Texas at 118 East Main Street, which is reported to have been the address of the Miller's Exchange Bank that Sam Bass and his gang planned to rob July 19, 1878. Instead of being next door to the general store they had entered to get supplies and to case the bank, as most other sources claim, this building is across the street, at the other end of the block. Today it is a restaurant. I do not know whether the building has the same style as the original building had.
