Ahijah W. Grimes, Lawman Killed By Sam Bass & His Gang On July 19, 1878

In the library at the Texas Rangers Museum in Waco, Texas, I found a family group sheet with this picture and other family members, submitted by Ben L. Grimes, saying that Ahijah was born in Bastrop, Texas, as was his wife Charlote A. (Lottie) Lyman, whom he married there on 2 March, 1874. She was the daughter of Judge Benjamin Lyman and his wife Charlotte Elisa Bryce. According to Karen R. Thompson who also had this picture in her book ROUND ROCK, TEXAS: FROM COWBOYS TO COMPUTERS, Ahijah, in Bastrop, had been the City Marshall, Tax Collector, Constable and Texas Ranger [for three months]. She added thatin May, 1878, they settled in Williamson County, Texas with their three little children, Elizabeth, Benjamin Lyman, and Mabel, where he was Deputy Sheriff and worked at the Miller's Exchange Bank. Also, that Ahijah's "uncle Albert Grimes died in 1836 defending the Alamo, and his grandfather was a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence..."
