4 Memories, Stories & Photos about Ahijah

AHIJAH W. "CAIGE" GRIMES
Williamson County Sheriff's Office, Texas

End of Watch Friday, July 19, 1878

Deputy Sheriff Caige Grimes was shot and killed during a stakeout of a local bank in Round Rock, Texas.

He and other officers from his agency and the Texas Rangers received a tip that the Bass Gang would rob the bank. The officers observed four members of the gang enter a store next door to the bank. Deputy Grimes approached one of the gang members and asked if he was armed. The suspect immediately shot him. Two Texas Rangers who were nearby opened fire on the gang, killing one and mortally wounding the shooter. The other two escaped.

Deputy Grimes was a former Texas Ranger. He was survived by his wife.

He is buried in the northeast corner of the Round Rock Cemetery, Round Rock, Texas.

The Newer Tombstone of Ahijah W. Grimes, Lawman Killed By Sam Bass & His Gang On 19 July, 1878
This gray granite tombstone of Ahijah W. Grimes which stands in front of the original, was erected by the Sam Bass Historical Foundation. It gives his name and then reads: "Here lies A. W. Grimes, Williamson County Deputy Sheriff & Former Texas Ranger Who Was Killed In Koppells Store, Main Street, Round Rock, July 19, 1878 As He Attempted To Disarm GangMembers Sam Bass, Seaborn Barnes & Frank Jackson. It is Not Known Who Fired The Fatal Shot. He Left A Wife And Three Children. She Received $200 & One Of The Bass Gang Horses As Indemnity For Her Husband's Death." [Note: Ahijah's wife died 26 July 1939 in Lampasas, Texas.]

I read that Grimes was shot 6 times, and was dead before he hit the floor. If Sam killed the man, this was the first and last time that he ever did such a thing. In the past he had dissuaded his gang from killing, as well, ousting them if they did.

After viewing his gravesite, I said a prayer for him and his family and on behalf of the family of Sam Bass, told him that I regretted he had died so unjustly at the hands of my first cousin, thrice removed, and his gang.

Ahijah W. Grimes, Lawman Killed By Sam Bass & His Gang On July 19, 1878
In the library at the Texas Rangers Museum in Waco, Texas, I found a family group sheet with this picture and other family members, submitted by Ben L. Grimes, saying that Ahijah was born in Bastrop, Texas, as was his wife Charlote A. (Lottie) Lyman, whom he married there on 2 March, 1874. She was the daughter of Judge Benjamin Lyman and his wife Charlotte Elisa Bryce. According to Karen R. Thompson who also had this picture in her book ROUND ROCK, TEXAS: FROM COWBOYS TO COMPUTERS, Ahijah, in Bastrop, had been the City Marshall, Tax Collector, Constable and Texas Ranger [for three months]. She added thatin May, 1878, they settled in Williamson County, Texas with their three little children, Elizabeth, Benjamin Lyman, and Mabel, where he was Deputy Sheriff and worked at the Miller's Exchange Bank. Also, that Ahijah's "uncle Albert Grimes died in 1836 defending the Alamo, and his grandfather was a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence..."
