Benjamin Noyes Ellsworth, b 1813, d.1902 Appointed as light house keeper to Ipswich Light by Abraham Lincoln. One of his daughters, Susan Treadwell Ellsworth kept house with him and assisted in lighthouse duties until his death. When the lighthouse was moved to Edgartown on Martha's Vineyard in 1932, she wrote a letter and fought to keep it in Ipswich.
Three of his sons fought in the Civil War. Capt Thomas Foulds Ellsworth was awarded the Medal of Honor for saving his commanding officer's life under heavy fire at the Battle of Honey Hill, SC. ... show more
