Erwin E. Smith, cowboy artist
Erwin E. Smith called himself a "cowboy artist" with the relatively new medium of photography. Rather than one of his usual subjects, he's pictured here on horseback looking like a cowboy himself. And he was - when he was younger, he often worked summers as a cowboy. He felt that a way of life was disappearing and he wanted to document the cowboy of the real West. Between 1905 and 1912, he did just that.
