Hiram Spencer 1801-1881 of Virginia, North Carolina, and Indiana

Hiram was born 27 Oct 1801 to William Spencer and perhaps Sarah Hatcher in Virginia. He is believed to have married at least three times in [Surry], North Carolina. After marrying his third wife about 1834, he brought her to Martin County, Indiana, where he had moved with his father, who unfortunately eventually drowned there about 1856 in the White River at Shoals. Hiram married twice more in Martin County. By 1870, Hiram moved his family to Lawrence County, Indiana. Hiram's five wives were: 1) an unknown, by whom he had a daughter, Delana, and a son, Lemuel; 2) Mary Louisa Reece, by whom he had a daughter,Mary Louisa; 3) Nancy Dobbins, by whom he had two daughters, Nancy and Eliza; 4) Mrs. Kesiah Gammon Camell [Campbell], by whom he had a son, Thomas J., and two daughters, Judith Ann and Emily J. aka Emaline; and 5) Rebecca Norman, by whom he had a daughter, Mary Susan. Hiram died in November, 1881 in Mitchell, Lawrence County, Indiana. One of my sons took this picture of a picture of Hiram on display at the Sheeks House in the Spring Mill State Park Pioneer Village. Hiram's daughter, Judith, had married Isom Sheeks, a son of David L. Sheeks, who was born and raised in the Sheeks House. Hiram became the shoemaker of the Sheeks family. He was also a farmer and had operated the ferry across the White River at Palestine.
