Lucretia "Crete" Rudolph met James Garfield when they were both students at Geauga Seminary. She was considered plain but he was attracted to her intelligence and thirst for knowledge.
They had 4 sons and a daughter. When Garfield was shot, she was recovering from malaria. She rushed to his side and was there when he died and stayed by him until he died 3 mos later.
Lucretia lived another 36 years.
