MAYBELLE SLIPPED INTO COOKIE ONE DAY AND THERE SHE STAYED. COOKIE OWNER OF COOKIES LOUNGE AT 5415 SOUTH LAMAR 428-9298 FOR OVER TWENTY FIVE YEARS. SHE CALLED IT THE PLACE. BEHIND HER BACK WE CALLED IT THE BEER JOINT. WE ALL GREW UP THERE MY MOTHER WORKED THEIR EVERY SATURDAY NIGHT FOR SIXTEEN YEARS. SHE AND HER BEST FRIEND KITTY WERE THE REIGNING QUEENS OF LAMAR STREET UNTIL SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY THE QUEEN OF QUEENS OF COOKIES WAS ROSE SHE COULD DATE FIFTEEN CUSTOMERS AT A TIME KEEPING EVERYONE HAPPY, THE PRETTY ONE WAS DORTHY LORRAINE HER AND ROSE HAD ONE THING IN COMMON AND HE WAS RICHARD COLE HE WAS THE KING OF THE LAMAR CLUB ALL MARRIED ALL PLAYING THE MATTRESS MAMBO THERE WERE MANY MORE MEMORABLE CHARACTERS ON LAMAR ST. ALL WHO MAKE ME SMILE. SPIVEYS THE CORNER AND BOBS ARE ALL GONE NOW THE OLD BEER JOINTS ARE MOSTLY TORN DOWN.MOST OF THE OLD CROWD IS LONG DEAD BUT ON A WEDNESDAY NIGHT DRIVING DOWN LAMAR ST. IF YOU LISTEN REALLY REALLY HARD YOU CAN HEAR THE JUKE BOX BLARING AND THE POOL BALLS BREAKING AND COOKIES LAUGH IN THE HOT TEXAS NIGHT ITS STILL 1973 AND LIFE IS GOOD
