Orson Welles during the 1938 broadcast of "The War of the Worlds". Since this radio show was put on in a news format, many people actually thought that New Jersey was being invaded by Martians. My father was 11 at the time and he was listening to the radio (he had heard the first part and knew that this was entertainment, not news) when a neighbor burst in with a shotgun, yelling that we were being invaded by aliens.
