The 1930s
The decade of the worldwide Great Depression See more...
The 1930's were a decade of severe stress: the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, the rise of Nazism. But it was also the end of Prohibition, the beginning of the change of land management (poor farm practices created the Dust Bowl), and the New Deal. It was a tough time through which to live but it was also the beginning of changes that lead to prosperity.
A photo of Carol and brother Murray Altmann riding their bikes in Manhattan NYC late 1930's. This is my mother (Carol Altmann Pinsky) on her bike with her brother, enjoying the streets of NYC. Somehow this picture was used for an ad that was one of those small inserts inside the subway trains at the time. My mother left NY in 1945 and went to St Paul, MN to make a life. She chose there because her sister Ruth Altmann had moved there. She lived there until 1970, when she moved to Los Angeles. She was a photographer, painter, poet, and writer. She was strong, fierce and a liberated woman from the moment she was born. Just like her own mother, Francis Saltzberg Altmann.

This is a photo of my dad, Sol Baum, age 10, with his older half-sister, Lilly Baum Broza, daughter of his mother (my grandmother) and her first husband. Lilly was born in Austria, I believe, and was left there with HER grandmother for a few years, while her mother (my grandmother, Fannie Apfelbaum), came to New York. There, Fannie met and married my grandfather Abraham (who also had been married before), They had one daughter, named after my great-grandmother, Devora. This little girl, Deborah, died at a young age. My middle name, Diane, is to honor her. (As her name, Deborah, was to honor Devora). My father was born a few years after Deborah died.

Barbara Ann "Cooley" Seated in 1935-37?: Do you recognize these children...could they be other adoptees just as my Mother Barbara was. Her DOB is given as 10/21/1931 (?) Not positive this is true. Locations would be PA, WV or Ohio. Looking for Birth Family! Thank you, Suzan, Barbara's daughter. Update: The boy in the back is Robert Hitchens from Wheeling, WV. His Uncle Herbert M Cooley adopted my mother Barbara. He does not remember the other children in the photo.

Gale Sondergaard was initially cast to play the role of the Wicked Witch of the West in MGM's famous film the Wizard of Oz (1939). Gale changed her mind about the role after MGM decided the Wicked Witch of the West should be evil and ugly as opposed to the glamorous villainess Gale thought she would play (as seen in this photo). Gale was afraid that playing an ugly role would forever hurt her career.
Of course Margaret Hamilton would end up playing the role of the Wicked Witch of the West in MGM's classic movie. Every time I see this photo I wonder how different the film might have been.
