Samuel G. Black served in the Kentucky Grays militia in 1862. He enlisted in the 53rd KY.Mounted Infantry in 1864 for a one year enlistment. He fought at the Battles of Saltville and Marion, Virginia and various skirmishes in Kentucky. He was discharged in September 1865.
