This is the original tombstone erected for Ahijah W. Grimes, the Williamson County Deputy Sheriff, who was shot dead by Sam Bass or one of his fellow gang members, whom he approached in Kopell's General Store, asking them to give up their concealed guns. This tombstone has a Texas Ranger Star marker beside it.

Ahijah W. Grimes was born to Robert Henry Grimes (1815 - 1863) and Elizabeth E. Highsmith (1821 - 1887). His father was born in North Carolina and his mother was born in Missouri. He had six siblings: Mary J., Elizabeth, William H., Jesse R., Albert, and Delia A. Grimes. Ahijah Grimes married Charlotte "Lottie" A. Lyman (1856 - 1939) on March 2, 1874 in Bastrop County, Texas. They had three children: Elizabeth (1875 - 1958), Benjamin Lyman (1876 - 1956) and Mabel Edna Grimes (1878 - 1957). Only 28 years old, married with three young children, Ahijah "Caige" was killed by outlaws while staking out a suspected bank robbery in Round Rock, Texas. See AHIJAH W. "CAIGE" GRIMES.
