Water Girl
Unidentified young girl drawing water from a cistern in Hall Co., near Memphis, Texas. Rain water was collected in gutters and directed into the cistern for family use. Cisterns were dug by hand and were about 40 to 50 feet deep. They were dug light bulb shaped with the smaller opening at the top. Photo created and published by Dorothea Lange in June 1937.
