Casad Family History & Genealogy

The CASAD family name can be traced back as far as the year 709 through the 14th century in the Duchy of Normandy, France. The name was originally COZAD, and the family was enobled in the 14th century, with the Title of MARQUIS De La COZAD. Later the name became COSSART. The COSSART family were Huguenots and fled France and went to Leyden, Holland, where they once again became a prominent family. In 1662 JACQUES JACOB COSSART sailed from Hollard to America on the De PURMERLANDER KEROCK and settled in New Amsterdam (now Manhatten Island). The family name is also listed as COSSAIRT and COSSARIS. For a while JACQUES was the Collector of Revenues for the pay of the clergy and soldiers. They moved, along with some other Huguenots and Dutch, and founded the village of Bushwick (now Brookland). There is a portrait of JACQUES hanging in the Astor Library in New York City.
The four sons of ANTHONY COSSART became the fathers of numerous families, the descendants of which are widely scattered throughout the United States and some foreign lands. About this time the family began changing the spelling of the name from the French and German to English and it may be found spelled in different ways, viz, COSAD, COSED, CASAD and COSART. The descendents of the three eldest sons of ANTHONY's son, JACOB, i.e., JACOB, SAMUEL and JOB, finally adopted COZAD as their name. Those remaining in the East, spelled it COSAD and those in the West later changed it to CASAD. There are other spellings of the name. ANTHONY'S descendants also used COZART and CAZORT.

Father: JOHN MILTON CASAD born October 15, 1817, in Fairfield, Butler County, New Jersey, and died July 27, 1864, at Summerfield, St. Clair County, Ilinois. He married ELIZABETH ANN MOORE, December 21, 1841, in St. Clair County, Illinois. He is buried in the Summerfield Cemetery in St. Clair County, Illinois. Parents: ANTHONY WAYNE CASAD and ANNA STITES.
Mother: ELIZABETH ANN MOORE born February 17, 1817, in Clinton County, Illinois, and died January 10, 1903, in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas. She is buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas.

Children of JOHN MILTON CASAD and ELIZABETH ANN MOORE:
1. EDGAR F. CASAD, born 1842 in Illinois, and died November 28, 1925, in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas. He is buried next to his Mother, ELIZABETH ANN CASAD, and his Sister, ANNE LAURA CASAD, in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas. He never married.
2. ORLA SAMUEL CASAD (twin), born January 30, 1846, in Trenton, Clinton County, Illinois, and died May 24, 1928, in Pittsburg, Crawford County, Kansas.
3. CHARLES CALAMIE CASAD (twin), born January 30, 1846, in Trenton, Clinton County, Illinois, and died March 28, 1862, at Paducah, Kentucky, during the Civil War. He was a member of Co. E, 2nd Illinois Cavalry. He is buried in the Summerfield Cemetery in St. Clair County, Illinois.
4. MARY ALICE CASAD, born 1848 in Illinois.
5. ANTHONY WAYNE CASAD, born in June, 1850, in Illinois.
6. ANNE LAURA CASAD, born 1852 in Illinois, and died January 22, 1929, in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas. She is buried with her Mother, ELIZABETH ANN CASAD, and Brother, EDGAR F. CASAD, in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas. She never married.
7. HERBERT CASAD, born April 7, 1853, and died November 17, 1860, in St. Clair County, Illinois. He is buried in the Summerfield Cemetery in St. Clair County, Illinois.
8. CASSIE M. CASAD, born December 9, 1858, and died February 10, 1962, in St. Clair County, Illinois. He is buried in the Summerfield Cemetery in St. Clair County, Illinois.

Children of ORLA SAMUEL CASAD and ALLIE MARY BABCOCK:
1. ETHEL ESTHER CASAD (KIKI), born December 5, 1877, in Illinois, and died October 30, 1971, in Kansas. She married JAMES F. LARKIN in 1900, born about 1878 in Illinois, and died in 1919. He worked for the Kansas City Southern Railroad for many years. They had no children.
2. ALLIE LENORA CASAD (NONA), born April 2, 1881, at Beulah, Crawford
County, Kansas. She married ALFRED G. HAZEN, born about 1877 in Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas. They had the following children: ALFRED C. HAZEN, ETHEL L. HAZEN, and JAMES HAZEN.
3. ORLENA FAY CASAD, born July 20, 1889, at Beulah, Crawford County, Kansas, died about 1960 in Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California, and is buried at Roosevelt Memorial Cemetery in Gardena, Los Angeles County, next to her Son, PARKER PALMER, her Daughter, PATRICIA ORLE' PALMER PHELPS, her Son-in-Law, C. WAYNE PHELPS, and her Granddaughter, BARBARA LYN PHELPS. She married FRED A. PALMER, who worked for the Kansas City Southern Railroad for many years. They had the following children: PATRICIA ORLE' PALMER, PAUL (PHIL) PALMER, PARKER PALMER, ANNA (ANN) PALMER, JOHN PALMER, MARY PALMER, and ORLENA FERN (PEGGY) PALMER.
4. MARGUERITE FINCH CASAD, born November 24, 1895, at Beulah, Crawford County, Kansas, and died July 12, 1896, at Beulah, Crawford Co., Kansas.
5. JOSEPHINE (JO) MILDRED CASAD, born August 23, 1897, in Pittsburg, Crawford County, Kansas. She married CHARLES E. SMITH.

During the American Civil War, my Great Grandfather, ORLA SAMUEL CASAD, enlisted in the Union Army on May 5, 1862, at Summerfield, St. Clair County, Illinois in the 67nd Regiment, Co. B Illinois Infantry reaching the rank of Full Corporal during his service. He fought at the battles of Boleres Leru, Holly Springs and Little Rock, Arkansas, where he claimed he was the first Union Soldier to enter the town after the battle. His twin brother, CHARLES CALAMIE CASAD, enlisted in Co. E, 2nd Illinois Calvary, and was killed on March 28, 1862, Paducah, Kentucky. ORLA SAMUEL CASAD was mustered out on May 7, l865.
