The first documented land recordes recorded in the Domesday Book a ULF OF YORK (from Norway) who later went by the name of Ulfkeitel de Couplande (also Couplandia and Coupland, Copeland.) His desc. went by the name of COPELAND by the 14th Century in northern England in York and Lancashire. Many of the earlier desc. went to Ireland, Scotland with the Lancashire branch going to Massachuttes and Virginia by the mid 1600's.
Name Origin
'llfamily name which was aopted from ULF THE ELDER, a Norwegian soldier born in 996 AD in the Og More region of Norway and arrived in England to fight for King Canute, He was awarded land and his family adopted the name of COUPLANDE---later to become COPELAND--and he died near the township of Woller, Enland. The township of COUPLAND is named for him. All of his descendants migrated to York and then to Dolphinlee, Lancashire, England and then in the 17th Century migrated to Braintree, Mass. and to Jamestown, Virginia.
