I would love to hear from anyone who might have known Carl Ekberg. I met him in Rockford Illinois in 1964 or 65. He was an older bachelor gentleman who lived in a winnibago behind us and I made myself a nuisance until he gave me his name. I was only four or five and I found it very sad that he didn’t have a Mommy to take care of him so I invited him to my house for dinner. One would think it crazy today but if you knew my family you’d understand how we adopted loved ones into our lives. I and my family were far from my grandparents and once my grandparents passed on and we’d shared many memories, I made him my Uncle. My family adopted him in summers and he traveled to Florida during the cold winters of Illinois and later, even when we moved to a farm in Missouri, he stayed with us there and I always looked forward to his returns from Florida because he was a generous spirit who shared his life and his experiences with me. I knew someday I would also live for love and experiences like he did. He wasn’t rich, nor was he thought of as successful. He had never married or had children but he was one of the kindest most loving people I’ve ever known. He was also very supportive. I loved singing with my family’s band and he was my biggest fan. I loved going on nature walks and we spent hours exploring our farm. After one very hot day of walking in 1968 Uncle Ek fell down grasping his chest and I ran a long way to scream for my Dad to call but no matter how we tried the cpr didn’t help and he passed away right before my eyes. I did not know his family. They came for his car and his material goods without speaking to us. In all the years I’d known him, he didn’t speak of his family. A helpful genealogist found some information for me a few years ago. His parents were Swedish and he had worked at a manufacturing company in Rockford until his retirement. His family who claimed his things were unknown. He was probably in his 60s or more when he passed away in 1968. If you know of him I’d love to speak to you. He was and still is... very loved.
