I've recovered an old photograph album from the late 1800's including faculty, staff, and students from Oberlin College which includes a photograph of Professor ELLIS. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's or 1890's with Professor ELLIS likely in his 60's at the time it was taken. Most of the photographs, like this one was taken by the Pfeifer Studio from Columbus, OH who probably came to take all the photographs at the Oberlin campus. I believe that this is a photograph of John Millott ELLIS and based on limited research was able to gather the following information regarding John and his family:
Rev. John Millott ELLIS was b. 27 Mar 1831 in Jaffrey or Keene, NH to parents Seth Britton or Brittain or Brittun or Brittan ELLIS (1792-1865) and Lucy JOSLYN or JOSLING or JOSLIN (1798-1874). John was one of 11 children born to this couple including Emeline Elizabeth; Maria Rebekah or Rebecca; Lucy Amelia; Lucius Rausted or Ransted; Mary Frances; John Millott; Samuel Horatio; Josephine Moore or More; Ellen Sophia; Charles Brainard; and Seth B. ELLIS, all born between 1820 and 1847. John married Minerva Emeline TENNEY (1837-1927) on 28 Aug 1862 in Oberlin, OH and they had four children including Albert Harris; Theodore Horatio; John Tenney; and Luman Millott ELLIS.
John was educated at Oberlin College and the Oberlin Seminary and taught at Oberlin from 1857 until just a few years before his death on 29 Mar 1894 in Chicago, IL while on his way back from Redlands, CA where he and his wife had been living for a short time due to his illness from TB. He is buried in the Westwood Cemetery in Oberlin, OH.

Carroll Ellis was born in Trenton Georgia, he survived the Great depression. As a young boy he stayed with his grandparents, Henry and Ethel Oliver. He was a young boy when his mother passed away. Then his father moved them to Miami Dade, Florida where his father would remarry. By 1940 he had moved back with his aunt in Tennessee where he enlisted in the Army, and served from 1940-1948-49. Between 1950-1960 he was driving a truck long haul, 1960 he married and had a daughter and by 1963 had a son. He was divorced by 1966, studied and became a crane operator. He remarried in 1968 adopted another daughter, and worked as crane operator in West Palm Beach. Later he moved to Sebring Florida, became what they called the peanut man, he grew grapes, made wine, they returned to West Palm Beach until he moved to South Carolina. 1991 he lost his son in Georgia, then later in 2005 lost his wife. He's 90 years old today, and still living in South Carolina, going strong.
He married Laverta Fritz Ellis in 1941 and they later divorced on September 24, 1973. They had a child Harriett Elaine Ellis. He also married Evelyn Goldman and they later divorced. A.B. ELLIS ... “I was born February, 1842 near Hodges and was living in Old Abbeville District when the war started. I offered my services, enlisting n Company F, Second S.C.V. under Captain Perryman on April 17, 1861. It wasn't very long before I was chosen as one of the musicians of my Company. I hate to recall the awful struggle but when honor was at stake we could not let the Yankees go buy unnoticed. I am eighty-four years old, living with my son in Greenwood. At another time I will give you an account of some of the battles. ...”
It was sad to see that he was so brief in describing an experience that from his service record, would seem to be much more varied and interesting than this short paragraph.
